Dieter Matthes - photography

28.3.2009 - 29.5.2009

20 years ago Berlin was surrounded by a wall: THE WALL. When it finally came down in 1990 the photographer Dieter Matthes travelled through the remains of the former GDR  and conserved a situation somewhere between "not anymore" and "not yet". He looked  into the faces of workers, who seemed to be proud of their efforts but unsecure about the future. He collected optimistic messages of socialism, that had turned into deplorable settings of decline. At the former border between the East and the West Matthes portrayed traces of vandalism that had changed the place into an absurd cemetery of broken dreams.
